Hello All, I will be gone for the next couple weeks. My 8 year old desktop died but I got lucky this last weekend. My wife's Uncle built a new PC and passed on his old parts to me. So, I'm now going outside my comfort zone and going to build my first PC. List of what I was given: - Asus M4A79T Deluxe Motherboard and processor
- IceQ X HD 6870 His Video card
- 8 Gb ram and a couple ram fans
- Xion 1000 watt power supply
- 1 TB SSD
- card reader & extra USB
- 24 inch flat screen monitor
Need to purchase:
- Case (Deepcool Kendomen RD)
- do I need a DVD or blueray?
- Windows Operating System (thinking window 7 or just get windows 10?)

You don't need a disc drive. When was the last time you used a physical disc? That said, to get the OS on there, you'll either need the disc, or move the OS onto a thumb drive to load on the new PC.
Do you know what processor you have in the mother? Also, 1TB SSD is Darning monstrous, as is the 1000W supply. Nothing you have will use even have that power.
Also also, WinX is pretty awesome, though buying 7 is likely cheaper and should be eligible for the 10 upgrade for free.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Blacksails the motherboard came with the AMD 790FX chipset.
5 minute update:
I finished installing all my parts and wiring everything up..OMG trying to make the wire harness neat and tidy was almost 2 hour in it self.
I spend 2 days trying to boot Windows 7 from a USB drive but no luck so I then spent 2 days trying to get the DVD writer working on my laptop to burn the boot desk for Windows 7. I was able to run a help program from Microsoft and low and behold it's working again.
Tonight I am installing Windows 7 and updating with all required fixes. So I should be online and playing this weekend.

Update:
after about 4 days for fudging around..looks like the on-board Ethernet card is f'ed..A problems that Asus knows about.
I was able to borrow a friend wireless USB stick, so I am online line updating and installing software...I should be around Thursday evening.
I will be switching over to a direct wired internet once I purchase a Ethernet card in the new year.
