Armored Warfare vs World of Tanks
So you have heard about this awesome new game called Armored Warfare and you want to know what all the fuss is about? Oh, and you play or have played World of Tanks? Below is a short lexicon or quick start guide to get you going.
If I’ve left anything out, be sure to let me know and I’ll get it added. On a side note, I think this may be my 300th post on Armored Talk!!!
World of Tanks vs Armored Warfare vehicles
Up to WWII era for World of Tanks, post WWII era for Armored Warfare
Heavies ~ MBT. Heavies in WoT are somewhat like Main Battle Tanks (MBT) but not directly. When side-scraping in Armored Warfare works it is a much different angle. Armored Warfare does not have any really slow vehicles
Medium ~ Light. Medium tanks tanks probably equate best with Light tanks in Armored Warfare. Lights in AW class ability is being able to fire more accurately on the move
Light ~ AFV. Light tanks from World of Tanks were the scout class. This role is now fulfilled by Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV) which have a reduced movement penalty for camouflage
TD = TD, although the wheeled TDs in Armored Warfare steer quite a bit different…wheels you know. Also, fully aimed in shots with Armored Warfare TDs do more damage
Artillery = Artillery but with a catch. Much lower damage, faster firing, and a counter-artillery mechanic. Artillery can also fire special rounds such as illumination and smoke
Premium tanks = Premium vehicles. In Armored Warfare there is more than 50% credit boost, the first game of the day has a 25% credit boost too.
Elite = Renowned, although there is also a Proven status when you have unlocked all regular modules on a vehicle. To get to Renowned status in Armored Warfare you spend the second 50% of progression unlocking the Retrofit System for upgrades
Tiers = Tiers, although Armored Warfare enters OBT with only 8 tiers. Tiers 9 and 10 are in development.
Nation based technology trees = Arms dealers for Armored Warfare’s technology tree. Only two dealers to start, more are on the way
World of Tanks has 400+ vehicles, Armored Warfare is launching with 70+ with plans of many, many more
Armored Warfare AmmoAP, HE, and HEAT ammunition is roughly equal in use but there are also Anti-Tank Guided Missles and no “gold” or “premium” ammo. Some vehicles can fire smoke rounds for cover. Overall ammo selection in Armored Warfare adds greater depth with the characteristics of the ammunition versus countermeasures such as ERA and APS
RNG in World of Tanks is somewhere around 25%. RNG in Armored Warfare is much less, the last number I heard was 10% (although HEAT is set to 15%)
Vehicle unlocking in Armored Warfare is also lateral…do X amount of damage from within (or outside of) Y range to unlock a branch
Crew and equipment
Crew = Crew except they can’t be moved to different tanks in Armored Warfare, even with premium money. Instead, Armored Warfare also has Commanders that freely move between different tanks. Commanders have abilities that unlock as you progress.
Consumables = Consumables. In Armored Warfare large kits are considerable cheaper and cost credits
Equipment = Equipment, but in Armored Warfare there is also a Retrofit System for upgrades. These upgrades allows you to further customize the performance of you vehicle
Economics of World of Tanks vs Armored Warfare
Gold = GoldGold
Premium time = Premium time, although it is a bit cheaper in Armored Warfare
Credits = Credits
XP or experience is now called Reputation
Free XP is Global Reputation in Armored Warfare
Converting locked vehicle experience to global reputation is similar to World of Tanks, but different. In Armored Warfare the reputation a vehicle earns once it reaches renowned status effectively gets doubled by being stored in two pools:
Vehicle Reputation always stays the vehicle and may be spent on future additions to the game for that vehicle.
Locked Reputation pool is akin to World of Tanks unconverted XP. The Locked Reputation pool is a big container full of extra earned reputation. Player’s can spend premium currency on to unlock and convert reputation from this pool to Global Reputation. At a cheaper rate than World of Tanks, currently 1 gold converts 125 reputation (100 more than World of Tanks)
Garage slots don’t cost gold
Game modes, Matchmaking, RNG, and Clans
Clans = Battalions
Can Wars may roughly translate to Territory Wars in Armored Warfare
Tournaments, Company Battles, Strongholds = in Armored Warfare. This is an area of the game that isn’t fully worked out yet. Obsidian will be added team and clan based systems and competitions, but they are focused on the core game at the moment.
Random pub matches = Random pub matches
Encounter mode = Encounter mode
Matchmaking = Matchmaking, except Armored Warfare Matchmaking is more robust, including:
Tighter tier spreads, at least once there are enough players playing (early access didn’t have enough players for proper matchmaking). See the link on the previous line for a more in-depth explanation
Skill plays a role but it is not a ranked ladder system. When 30 players are picked for a battle based on the power levels of their vehicles those players are then distributed to the teams by a secret sauce player performance rating whenever possible
Special artillery rules. There won’t be too many or an uneven amount of artillery vehicles on either side. The limit is currently set to 2 artillery per side
platoonPlatoons = Platoons but fail platoons are guarded against with tier restrictions (2 tiers) inside of a platoon. Player limit for a platoon is extended to 5 for PvE game mode
Other additions to Armored Warfare and information
Reputation earned in Armored Warfare rewards better play over winning. Winning the game is not de-emphasized, but instead of a 50% bonus for the winning team there is only a 25% bonus for players on the winning side. The rest of the bonus experience is distributed to all players that did well (lots of damage, lots of spotting damage, etc.). It is entirely possible the top players on the losing team earn as much reputation as many of the players on the winning team.
Interface (player panel, reticle, minimap, etc.) is similar, I suggest looking at:
Mods are not allowed in Armored Warfare so many are making their way into the game. You can turn on damage log and hit lot at bottom of UI section in settings
Operation Phalanx in Armored WarfareMinimap size is adjusted in settings: UI interface instead of +/- keys.
Consider changing the Cursor activated minimap from artillery to all vehicles. You can do this in the gameplay tab of settings. This way when you hit your ctrl key the minimap is placed in the center of the screen (where your cursor will appear) for viewing or pining.
Also in the gameplay tab, select different tag damage styles. Popcorn is fun
Note one big interface addition: the panel in the lower left shows a graphic indicating your camo rating and what direction/how much the cover or concealment is hiding you.
Armored Warfare’s maps feature more graphics and destructible material. Some quite a bit larger. The new Reactor Map is 1.4 km, many are 1.2 and the smallest equate to WoT’s largest at 1.0. Don’t be fooled in believing a 1.4 km map is only 40% larger than a 1.0 map. It is actually nearly twice as large (1.96 to be exact).
Player vs Environment (PvE) mode where 5 players (your platoon can be 5 players in PvE mode) battle against bots to complete missions. 4 difficulty settings, daily missions, and even mini-bosses. As a stress relief, break from public matches, or just the fun of fighting against bots, you will definitely want to try this game mode.
Armored Warfare basePlayer bases with buildings provide different bonuses such as enhanced credit making, more reputation earning, etc. Think of this as individual stronghold bases for players.
Armored Warfare gameplay is by no means a twitchy first person shooter, but tanks and vehicles definitely move faster. Also it is more team based, so stick together more.
World of Tanks uses Big World, Armored Warfare uses CryEngine
Wargaming develops and publishes World of Tanks. Obsidian Entertainment developers Armored Warfare and is an American company. My.com publishes Armored Warfare in NA and EU while Mail.Ru Group distributes the game in Russia. Mail.Ru is a Russian company and My.com acts as a mostly autonomous subsidiary with offices in the Netherlands and California
While the above listing probably contains more information because it is a newer post, there is an older article covering the differences between Armored Warfare and World of Tank too.
