I've been tooling around a lot with AFV's lately and have really been getting used to the so called "handbrake". It seems to be one of those little known features that isn't know or utilized enough by many when playing anything that's got some good speed to it.
It really comes in handy when you are rushing to a target, trying to close the distance, and have the option to circle strafe the target instead of just boom and zoom. I really wish I could do a video to demonstrate the plus side of using the "handbrake", I know WoT is trying to implement the same thing and they have a video up, but I won't like that here.
So the basic theory behind it is when you press the "S" key to slow down, you are applying the brakes to both tracks equally, but not with much force. Thus the reason it takes you a rather long time to slow down in a fast vehicle when just pressing "S". Even more so if you're in a vehicle that weighs a lot, but has a good top speed.
Now when you press "Space", if this is the key you still have bound to it, it will immediately lock up both tracks resulting in a skin. Now where they is most effect is when taking a corner, the skin will scrub off your speed in a big hurry. Here is the cool part. When you press say the "A" key, your left track will stay locked up, but it will allow your right track to free wheel and bring your tank to the left in a rather big hurry. Now this would be like some arcade racing game where you'll take a 90 degree corner at full chat by simply hitting the "handbrake". What it will allow you to do is slow down, initiate a tighter turn, and get off that circle strafe.
This is most effective against tanks that have a very good hull and turret traverse speed that may be able to keep up with you if you rip past and simply apply the brakes to slow down and turn.
I hope this explained it somewhat, I'll try to edit and revise it when I have a little more free time. Or maybe convince Will top make a video about the topic.
Thanks!
